BTOG 2021 Symposium: NTRK gene fusions in lung cancer – Find, test, and treat

The Bayer sponsored symposium for the British Thoracic Oncology Group, chaired by:

  • Dr Emma Howard (Scientific Operations Director, North West Genomic Laboratory Hub) provides an overview of the Genomic Medicines Service Infrastructure which includes 7 Genomic Laboratory Hubs across England. This service helps clinical genomics teams to help identify new targets and treatment options to improve outcomes for patients.
  • Dr Helene Schlecht (Lead Scientist for Cancer Genomics, North West Genomic Laboratory Hub) discusses the testing pathway for gene fusions including NTRK testing, with a particular focus upon the lung cancer testing pathway.
  • Dr Carles Escriu (Consultant in Thoracic Medical Oncology, Clatterbridge Oncology Centre, Liverpool) presents information on NTRK testing and the importance of obtaining molecular profiles in as many lung cancer patients as possible to benefit patients, as well as inform clinical research strategy and day to day patient management.
  • Dr Mark Teo (Consultant Clinical Oncologist, Leeds Cancer Center) presents a case report of a lung cancer patient with an NTRK fusion mutation who was commenced on larotrectinib following NICE approval in May 2020.

Larotrectinib is licensed as a monotherapy and is indicated for the treatment of adult and paediatric patients with solid tumours that display an NTRK gene fusion who have a disease that is locally advanced metastatic or where surgical resection is likely to result in severe morbidity and who have no satisfactory treatment options.
